Brand Identity

What is Branding?

First, let’s start with a scenario.

Lori just finished her business plan, and is opening a flower shop. She has already invested in all the things she needs to open. She has vases, displays, suppliers. Maybe she has a special water filtration system. I assume she has already chosen a name for her business, but may also still be deciding on that factor.

I’d begin with our consultation where I learn about her inspiration. Why a flower shop? Is this all cut flowers, do you sell other plants? Are they all indoor or do you have outdoor options as well. Do you do custom orders? Etc.

If her business is close enough for me to experience it in person, I’d go there to feel what it’s like parking, walking to and through the door. Is it small and cozy with contact or being greeted the moment I walk in, or do I have an independent experience before I see her. Is her service hands on from greeting to register, or do I browse then go to her to tell her what I’m thinking?

How is the product packaged as I leave the store? Are the flowers wrapped in clear plastic, or is it brown paper? Is the brown paper cut from a roll or is it pre-cut?

Who is her target customer? Women 30+? Men 20-50?

Whare are they looking for when they came in? Plants for the flower garden? Seeds? Advice? Flowers from a man to his wife or girlfriend? Are they looking for wedding arrangements?

Is the feeling of the shop more formal or relaxed? What is the price range?

Lots to discuss

There are lots of things to discuss before I can get started. You’ve dreamed of this moment, and this is the face of business.

Once I have all that information, I will chose and explore brand driver words and thought mapping.

What is its story? How will people connect with the flower shop?

I will do market research on other lower shops large and small, what does the target audience look like, what do I like/ dislike about how they represent their brand/logo/tagline? Do they have branded collateral? What is successful?

I will then begin exploring brand driver words and word mapping. This is part of the process before arriving at a tagline/ logo.

I will sketch out ideas of shapes, tag lines and color choices.

I will explore fonts and matching the emotion behind your brand and what the font expresses.

Then I begin the digital process. I build the logo and word mark pairing my options with fonts, colors and how they connect to the tag line. I will test them in different scenarios such as advertisements, billboards and banners for social media.

Once I have my top 3-5 designs, I will refine and self critique to eliminate 3 options to present my top 2 to my client.
